FYI Post

We're into day 3 folks. By now we should be beginning to learn things that we can share with the group about the vegetarian lifestyle. Please comment here and tell us things you're finding interesting or challenging or beneficial. I'll start it off:

I learned yesterday that traditional US grocery stores are a rip-off. If you have the opportunity, check the international stores for produce, tofu, spices, etc... Yesterday, I went to Harris Teeter and Shoppers and they both had tofu in the $2.50-$3 range. The international store was $1.50 for the same amount of tofu. HT and Shoppers were $4.50ish for Tahini (sesame paste)(you're forced to buy a big one), international store was $1.99. BJ's has peeled garlic in a small jar (about 2.5 lbs) for about $3.99, international store had 5lbs for the same price. Obviously, the benefits of the traditional stores are convenience, patriotism (for those who care about that) and that they still have alot of things that you can't find at the international spots, but whenever possible, I think you'll save alot of money at the international stores.

  1. So far I have been holding somewhat OK. I was craving in the night and broke the plan with a chicken patty which was good (lol). No joke but on the real. I have changed up the amount of vegetable I usually consume in a day. I eat more spinach and beans and strng beans. I drink more water than before and the amount of Soymilk has somewhat increased which is good. What I am trying to do and cut the habit of doing is eating and drinking at the same time. I think my tank will be more filled with food than liquid when I eat and wait for 30 minutes before drinking or vice versa. Next thang I need to get back on is exercise. crucial, but I am seeing a difference in weight as well as feeling. My stomach is not big or bloated or bng like it is about to bust. Thank God. Let's see what's up at the end of the week. Respect

  2. Hey fam I'm checking in. I've done the vegan/vegetarian thing a couple times before but it's been a while and lately I've been overloading on meat. This came right on time for me. Sunday I cooked dinner for the first time in a looooong time, no fast food which is great for me since they know my name at Wendys, LOL. I'm searching for some great recipes a girlfriend gave me a while back to share.

  3. Good point brah', I did notice the price of tofu varied from place to place. It's apparent that eating healthy is big business, so some stores will try to make out like bandits.

I bought over a pound of Firm Tofu
for $1.29 from the asian supermarket. But what was interesting was that while I was buying my tofu an asian gentleman walked up and grabbed some other tofu out of an adjacent bin instead. I asked what the difference was and he said that the tofu that I got was processed and he can't confirm how fresh it is...versus this fresh batch that is put out each day. This fresh batch was 3 pieces for a $1.00, which is even cheaper than the brand name tofu. I did some research on it when I got home. This is what I found:

While mass-produced tofu is now available at many supermarkets and grocery stores, it's even better to find your local Asian grocery and buy it fresh there. Packaged tofu will have traveled many miles to reach its destination, and might contain preservatives that reduce both the flavor and nutritional value. In general, the fresher, the better.

I wasn't swayed either way because I'm already ahead of the game by even having any kind of tofu in the first place.lol. So I decided to buy both, ($2.29 for both it was worth the effort to see if there was a true difference) I'll let you know how it turns out.

Bottom line...buy tofu (and other products) from places that don't see it as a special product. Asians have been eating tofu for centuries while it's still making its way into American culture. So maybe that's why we feel we can charge extra specialty prices for an otherwise common product. Corporate American strikes again...

  4. What a gwaan people. So far so good. As the days have progressed for this week, what i notice is that I am not packing my stomach to the brim. I really feel light. What I also notice is my energy has somewhat dropped and I am more lethargic. So I am watching that to see if I need to eat a little more or maybe sleep more too as well. Just trying to find that right balance. but so far, I like what I see and feel. I hope to shed some pounds even though I need not to. I am not exactly Meaty. respect fried Dumps
